The legal part is the bedrock of your union. Here is how to navigate the administration without stress.
1. Choose your celebration venue (City Hall)
Usually, you can get married in the town where one of the two future spouses has their domicile or established residence for at least one continuous month.
In many countries, it is also possible to get married in the town where one of your parents resides. this can simplify logistics if you are returning to your roots for the Big Day.
2. Build your marriage folder
The folder must be complete when filed to finalize your date. Birth certificates must usually be recent (less than 3 months old if issued locally, or 6 months if from abroad).
- Proof of residence dated within the last 3 months
- Original ID cards/passports and copies
- Witness information (copies of IDs, addresses, and occupations)
- Notary certificate if you have a prenuptial agreement
3. The preliminary interview
The registrar may request to meet you for an interview. This is a standard procedure to verify the reality of your marriage project and the free consent of both future spouses.
It is especially common if one spouse lives abroad or if the registrar needs clarification on the submitted documents.
4. Publication of the banns
This formality makes your plans public. A notice must be posted at the entrance of the city hall for 10 days before the wedding can take place.
If you live in two different towns, the banns must be published in both respective city halls.
5. Choose your witnesses
Their legal role is to witness the signing of the marriage act and confirm your identity. You can have one or two each (maximum 4 globally).
Make sure to ask for their documents (ID, occupation) in advance so you don't stall the filing process at the last minute.
6. Marriage contract (Recommended)
Without a contract, you usually fall under a default legal regime like joint property. A notarized contract allows you to choose separation of property or other arrangements.
Even if you don't have many assets today, a contract protects your future earnings and personal inheritances. It's mutual security for the future.
